Nerdy Day Trips Can Help You Plan Your Geek Adventures
Written by Dave Hilton

X Wing at Wings Over The Rockies Air Museum

I love finding quirky, unique places to visit when I travel. I'm just not a big fan of the standard tourist attractions. Now, thanks to GeekSugar, I've found a great resource for Geeks & Nerds all over this great planet to find cool places to see...if they're looking for something new- Nerdy Day Trips!

Using a custom Google Map, they've put together a global hodgepodge of Nerdy locations to explore. The site also allows users to add more options if you come across something interesting during your adventures.

I've already found somewhere I plan to visit! I've already mentioned that in September I'm attending FinCon12 in Denver, CO. Apparently, the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum not only features a ton of cool aeronautical and space stuff...but they also have a full-size X-Wing replica (see photo above)! SWEET! So when I'm tired of talking personal finance, I'll head over to this museum (but I'll make sure to call first to make sure the X-Wing isn't out on a traveling exhibit).

It's only fair that I contribute to the site, since I've benefited from this project. I noticed the Scarborough Renaissance Festival (held in Waxahachie, TX) is not listed yet. That's not acceptable...

So, next time you're planning a trip or vacation, you should definitely try to find something unconventional to add to your itinerary!

The Real Cost For In-Game Gold [Guest Post]
Written by Debt Black Hole Guest Post

This is a special Guest Post from Tim Cooley. If you'd like to read more of Tim's articles- follow him on Twitter: @TimlCooley

Tim Cooley & His Wife

The last few years of gaming have really bridged an unknown gap of real world economy and in game economy. We have all seen this in the works. Receiving twenty whispers about gold offers is upsetting, but so tempting, especially when you have been dancing outside the auction house for an hour and made 5 gold.

Blizzard announced the newest combination of real money transaction into its upcoming release of "Diablo III." This has flipped the world upside down for more than one reason, but the most intriguing aspect is bringing real world economics to the gaming world. As with most games, I pay more attention to the scrolling news feed of "League of Legends" than I do of CNN.com or SBS news Australia, but there are certain stories that one has to pay attention too.

I am referring to the US National Debt. It is everywhere. Because my family has been in the military I was more inclined to follow this story. After a few moments of shaking my head I came to a realization: What if the gaming community could help out countries in need. Not by building fire, because those virtual fires don’t make heat. But by, wait for it. . . GOLD FARMING!!!

I am not talking about giving out points or life achievement, which would be awesome, but really helping out this debt situation. I hope you are sitting down for this. What if gamers paid down the national debt? That's right, farm gold, sell it for money and reduce the national debt! The best part about it is if your spouse yells at you for gaming you can say, "Honey, I am helping out the country."

I got a spam recently offering 300,000 gold for $600. Why can’t our government farm gold and then pay off the national debt? For as long as they deliberate on issues this whole debt issue could have been paid off. We all could farm gold for the government; the more we help the faster the debt goes down.

So here is how you can help. Click on Help Pay off the National Debt. Simply enter how much you make in the real world to find out how much it's worth in game gold. By scrolling down, you can also see how long it would take for us as a nation of gamers to pay off the National Debt.

It's clear to see from the photo at the bottom the possibilities of this idea. The most popular games ("Final Fantasy," "Lord of the Rings," "RIFT," "Star Wars Old Republic" and "World of Warcraft") are broken down so you can see how long it would take to pay off the U.S. National Debt for each game. I am excited for this solution. Happy Farming!!

Would you farm gold for to help pay off the U.S. National Debt?

I'm not sure my wife would buy the "helping out the country" excuse if I logged too many hours on DC Universe Online or Star Trek Online, but it's a very interesting idea. So gamers...would you volunteer some of your time to help out with the deficit or national debt?

Have an idea for a Guest Post on the Debt Black Hole? I'd love to hear about it! First, read through my Guest Post Guidelines and then contact me when you're ready to talk about your idea (that's what Tim did).

Financial Nemesis Update: March 2012 Eating Out Total
Written by Dave Hilton

 Mortal Kombat- Scorpion Fatality

The first quarter of 2012 is over...and we have a lot fewer quarters than I want all thanks to our apparent inability to defeat our biggest financial nemesis- G.O.T.E. (going out to eat)! Until I added up this month's total, I thought last month's total of $521.71 and January's total of $566.81 were bad. Nope. If our bank account was a Mortal Kombat character- it would have died a painful & graphic death! EATING OUT WINS!

In March, we even managed to make our 2011 monthly average of $897 look good. Ouch...

So just how weak were we? We dished out (pun definitely intended) a total of $1013.73 going out to eat! Here's the breakdown:

March 2012 Debt Black Hole Eating Out Breakdown

Despite the trend of abject failure, we're not giving up. We may have lost a few battles, but we haven't lost the war. Just because we didn't hit our goals for the first three months of 2012- we still have 9 months to make up for it! At least that's what I keep telling myself.

Now that I have three months of data to work with- I can also see weekends are our big problem areas. Armed with that info- we can make adjustments to how we plan our weekend meals. We can adjust the types of food we buy at the grocery store and buy the things we need to make similar things at home...at a fraction of the cost. I can also see our monthly average for Q1 2012 is still less than the 2011 average at $700.75. So even though our monthly amounts are still larger than we'd like- we're still going in the right direction (for the most part).

The sad thing is I had to print out the above breakdown so my wife would believe how much we spent. She thought I was joking. Now she knows I wasn't. A total like that just isn't funny.

I completely agree with Aloysa from My Broken Coin- I'm starting to have a love/hate relationship with eating out, too. I love how it tastes & having other people cook for me...but I don't like paying for it.

So what is the most you've ever spent eating out in a month? Are you flabbergasted (what a great word) at our monthly totals?

Mind Meld: JoBlo
Written by Dave Hilton

Vulcan image by gageskidmore

As Geeks, we tend to spend our money (& time) differently than most people. The Debt Black Hole "Mind Meld"  is a special interview series designed to find out more about how Geek actors, authors, journalists, artists, scientists, bloggers, podcasters, entrepreneurs & others make, spend & manage their money and fund their lifestyle.

This month's Mind Meld has been a long time coming. So many of the people I talk to about interviews are quite busy. And I don't think there are too many people I've interacted with who are busier than the ultimate movie Geek- Berge Garabedian (aka JoBlo) from JoBlo.com! Berge was born in Holland to Armenian parents. He moved to Canada at the age of eight, played a lot of hockey on the streets and eventually got an MBA degree from McGill University. In 1998, he started a little website called JoBlo.com which has grown into one of the most popular movie fansites around the world (130k visitors/day). He enjoys movies, comic books, poker and nachos. You can follow JoBlo on Twitter- @JoBlocom.

>>What are your default movie/tv shows & genres?

I watch way too many movies to list here, but some of the ones I’ve watched over 5-10 times include Star Wars, When Harry Met Sally, Alien, Goodfellas, Total Recall, Jerry Maguire, Minority Report, The Matrix, Edward Scissorhands. The TV shows I watch nowadays include “Curb your Enthusiasm”, “American Dad”, “Eastbound & Down”, anything sports-related like “PTI”, “Around the Horn”, etc….  I’m also Canadian so anytime there’s hockey on TV, I’m there!

>>What kinds of stuff do you collect (e.g. Action Figures, Comics, Props, Autographs, Art, etc.)?

A little bit of everything, to be honest with you. When I was a kid, I collected hockey cards and comic books. I still own Wayne Gretzky’s rookie card and X-Men #4 in near-mint condition. I probably still have about 500 comic books in boxes, but mostly I buy graphic novels nowadays, because I like to read them, as opposed to just slapping them in plastic covers. Nowadays, I collect cool artwork for my home- my current fave is Justin Reed Art (see 3 of his prints below)- you can purchase his reprints on AllPosters.com, as well as anything really awesome from Sideshow Collectibles- including my giant Hellboy “right hand of Doom” (picture also below) in my office- tons of different busts including Iron Man, Incredible Hulk and Alien, as well as anything to do with The Nightmare before Christmas. I’ve also tried buying some cool memorabilia from movie auctions, but they generally get really expensive, so I don’t end up with shit, but I did win a prop from Kevin Smith’s JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, as well as the jacket Woody Harrelson wore throughout the comedy KINGPIN. I dig that one.

>>What's the pièce de résistance of your collection?

Well, I mentioned a couple of them above (Gretzky card and X-Men #4), but the first thing that I bought for my house was this 6-foot Jack Skellington figure (pictured below) from Disney.com, and it still entertains folks to this day. I actually wrote up a couple of articles about my collection back in 2007, which you can read here and here. Videos of my DVD/BLU-RAY collection (from 2007) here.

>>What piece would you LOVE to add to your collection?

I’m waiting to become really rich before buying myself the life-size TERMINATOR figure from Sideshow Collectibles, which I would stick right in the entrance-way of my home…. ;) You know, just to scare those people off who shouldn’t be there.

>>What projects/businesses are you involved with right now you'd like to promote to my readers?

The JOBLO MOVIE NETWORK is close to being complete in terms of sections and what-not, but we’re refining what we have now and we’ll soon be introducing a revamped front page, along with revamped news sections, which we believe will only enrich the user experience on our site. We recently launched our own YouTube channel which has already garnered over 16,000,000 views in the past few months and continue to grow our brand across various social media platforms, just because…well, apparently you have to do that nowadays! (Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest, etc….)

>>What is the last AMAZING book you read or movie you watched (just pick one) ?

I honestly don’t read too many books anymore (magazines galore though!), but the last book I read that was memorable for me was Deepak Chopra’s REINVENTING THE BODY, RESURRECTING THE SOUL which helped me through some health issues that I fought through over the past 5-6 years. I recommend it to anyone looking to get out of bad habits which relate to your health issues.

Thanks again to Berge for allowing me to interview him for this installment of the Debt Black Hole "Mind Meld" interview series!
